Project 1725039 – Chiller Service & Restoration

Bringing a Critical Chiller Back to Life in Equatorial Guinea

Following a comprehensive system survey in 2024, Tradewinds identified the need for a complete upgrade of an ageing cooling system with a more modern and robust solution. While the new system was being designed and manufactured, we were tasked with supporting and restoring the existing chillers to maintain operational reliability.

One particular challenge involved a Carrier 30HXC chiller that had been out of service for more than two years. With the facility relying on a single operational chiller, the risk of a complete cooling system failure posed a significant threat to ongoing FPSO operations.

This critical piece of equipment plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of a marine industrial facility.

At the end of 2025, our Senior Engineer travelled to Equatorial Guinea to undertake the critical task of returning the unit to service.

The restoration required extensive diagnostics, system refitting, installation works, and detailed fault-finding.

During the investigation, several complex issues were uncovered, including:

  • Incorrect software installed on the MBB control boards
  • Misconfigured DIP switch settings affecting system stability
  • A failed 400A MCB and a corroded chilled water sensor
  • A faulty EEV cable connection causing system overcharging
  • Oil contamination within the liquid line and electronic expansion valve

Over three intensive days, working closely with the client's onsite technicians, our engineer systematically diagnosed and resolved each fault through a combination of troubleshooting, reverse engineering, and specialist HVAC expertise.

The successful recommissioning of the chiller restored a critical asset to operation, significantly reducing the operational risk to the facility and ensuring greater system resilience until the replacement solution is installed.

This project demonstrates the importance of proactive maintenance, accurate fault diagnosis, and experienced engineering support when dealing with complex HVAC systems in demanding environments.

We are proud of the teamwork, technical expertise, and commitment shown throughout this project and look forward to returning in 2027 to install the new system developed in line with the client's requirements and our survey recommendations.

A great example of engineering excellence, collaboration, and problem-solving in action.

At Tradewinds, we are committed to delivering high levels of client satisfaction and actively encourage feedback on all our products and services.
